CONIFERS won six out of eight trophies as Budmouth Academy hosted the annual Chesil Primary Cross Country races for children in Years 3-6.

In just its second year, the event continues to grow with over 200 children taking part in the four races.

After weeks of rain, the ground was very heavy underfoot but the sun shone on all the children for the afternoon. 

Despite more schools taking part this year it proved to be another successful turnout for Conifers.

The first event was the Year 3 and 4 girls and Conifers edged out Chickerell by just three points to take the title with Atlantic in third. Conifers also won the B team trophy.

In the Year 3 and 4 boys event, Conifers won emphatically with a fantastic score of 18 ahead of Chickerell and Radipole. Conifers again claimed the B team award.

In the Year 5 and 6 girls race it was a battle between Conifers and Chickerell, Conifers once again coming out on top.

Southill took third and Conifers took the B team award to clinch their sixth piece of silverware.

Chickerell finally broke the Conifers dominance by winning the Year 5 and 6 boys event with the best score of the day. Their A team achieved 11 points with the best score possible being 10.

Southill took second and Conifers third, with Chickerell taking the B Team trophy. 

Elsewhere, Budmouth Academy took part in the Dorset Schools Cross Country Championships.

This event is for individual schools but also acts as the selection process for the South West Championships on Saturday, February 4 at Blaise Castle.

A course inspection took place on the morning of the race and fortunately, despite the frost, the race was allowed to go ahead.

It was an historic day for Budmouth as they secured their first-ever county cross-country title.

More than 120 athletes from schools all over Dorset took part and Budmouth had three runners in the top three to mark a phenomenal achievement.

Budmouth posted a team score of 48 to take the title for the very first time.

Year 7 girls Mabel Diment-Stevens (4th), Nancy Diment-Stevens (7th) and Grace Cumes (8th) finished in the top ten to earn call-ups for the Dorset Cross Country team to compete at the South West Championships on Saturday, February 4.
