WEYMOUTH 3

DARKSTAR DERBYSHIRE 0

HAVING surprisingly lost their first match of the season last week Weymouth Beach Volleyball Club bounced back in National League Division One with an emphatic 3-0 win over Darkstar Derbyshire.

Derbyshire, coached by beach volleyball Olympian Audrey Cooper, should have been strong opposition for Weymouth but they were never allowed to get into their stride.

Weymouth went into the match without the injured Matt Hunter but this did not seem to affect them and they stormed away to a 7-0 lead with excellent serving from captain Ryan Stout which Derbyshire struggled to control.

From this point Weymouth never lost control of the set and held on to their comfortable lead to take the set 25-10.

It looked like Derbyshire were beginning to settle into the match at the beginning of the second set as the teams matched each other point-for-point up until the halfway stage in the set.

Weymouth once again managed to dominate with strong attacks and probably the best serving runs the team has ever put together.

Particularly impressive for Weymouth was Liam Tewkesbury whose hitting through four and serving Derbyshire did not really have an answer to.

Tewkesbury is not always guaranteed a place in the starting line-up but on this form certainly impressed coach Simon Golding and the supporters who rated him man of the match.

Weymouth duly took control of the set and ran out 25-15 winners to take a 2-0 lead.

Weymouth were very conscious that Derbyshire were highly capable of coming back in the third set but this never materialized as Weymouth continued to dominate every phase of play.

Derbyshire had no answer to the hitting of Valdis Baranovs and Lucas Pusvaskis and Weymouth led throughout the set to win 25-16 and take the match and move into second.

After the match, Weymouth coach Simon Golding said: “I am delighted with how the players reacted to the disappointment of last week’s defeat and now hope that they can continue this next weekend when we travel North for a double header against unbeaten Stockport and Manchester Marvels.

“It will be particularly tough as we will be without our main setter and captain Ryan Stout who is unavailable for the trip.”
