GREENHILL'S Ben Paulley and Nick Voss of Dorchester have taken the next step towards securing places in the England under-25 side.
Both featured in the opening trial at Norgren, Warwickshire, and have been selected for the next trial at the New Lount club, Leicestershire, on July 20 from which the final squad of 24 plus two reserves will be chosen for this year's junior British Isles Interna- tional Series in Scotland on September 6-7.
Paulley made his BIIS outdoor debut last summer as lead for Devon skip James Webber while Voss has still to win his international spurs.
Despite the best efforts of the two youngsters Dorset lost 40-33 to Cornwall in the Two Fours competition at St Austell.
Voss and his club colleagues Martin Pavey and Wayne Garnett, plus Greenhill skip Dave Ralph, scored a 21-18 success after being held to 12-12 on ten ends by Mark Foster.
However, on the other rink Paulley, Craig Shepherd (Wimborne) and Greenhill twosome Doug Rumble and Barry Patterson trailed 13-5 on ten ends and 19-7 after 15 in a 22-12 defeat by England cap Mark Read.
This Saturday, Dorset head west again but this time to Exeter to tackle Devon in their opening match of the Middleton Cup season at Exonia (2pm).
* The Dorchester quartet of John Lawlor, Alan Newton, Frank Gwatkin and Dave Joslin, - aka The Contemptible Four - conjured up a surprise in the Dorset championships.
Facing the formidable Greenhill rink of Dave Smith, John Crabb, Neil Burroughs and Barry Patterson the Dorchester men led 7-2 at five ends and increased the margin to 16-2 following the tenth before going 21-6 in front on the 18th at which point the visitors hoisted the white flag in this first-round fours match.
Dorchester now meet Graham Parker at Wellworthy tomorrow. With Lawlor under the weather George Spracklen is called up as a sub in his final match before becoming a teenager.
The youngster and Ged Costello progressed in the pairs against Graham Ayers and John Hodder of Greenhill.
