WINNERS at the Weymouth Tennis Club Championships were spread over four weeks and two venues due to windy and wet weather.
In the men’s singles Kaiese Brown defeated Clif Moreton in straight sets but the former club coach and champion put up stern resistance and it took some powerful hitting, coupled with some deft drop shots, for Brown to win the title for the first time 6-4, 6-3.
In the ladies’ singles final Georgina Mason overcame the determined and experienced mixed doubles captain Val Sewry 6-0, 6-2 in an entertaining final.
The opening games involved long rallies but Mason, a former Cardiff University player, displayed some hard-hitting ground strokes and great positional play and this was key to her victory.

In the men’s doubles, local coach Clive Stow partnered up with John Samuelson against the experienced pairing of Ed Evans and Kaiese Brown.
This match was played indoors at the Wey Valley Tennis Centre due to inclement weather and the optimum conditions made for a very close final.
Stow and Samuelson played some measured tennis and led in the first set by three games only for Evans and Brown to up their game and come back and clinch it 6-4.
The second set was also very competitive and Stow and Samuelson edged it 7-5.
The final set saw Ed and Kaiese win the match by a score of 7-5 in a very hard-fought encounter.
Ladies doubles honours were competed for by Hannah Malleson and Heather Caines against Georgina Mason and Alexa Beazer.
There was little to separate the two pairings and the result reflected that as Malleson and Caines prevailed in a long, entertaining match 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
The mixed doubles event was won by the experienced pairing of Martin Bottomley and Caines against the up-and-rising team of Samuelson and Jane Howard.
This match started outside at Weymouth Tennis Club where Samuelson and Howard won the first set 6-2.
They were however interrupted by rain and finished the following weekend indoors.
Bottomley and Caines then seemed to have reassessed their tactics and came through the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the title.
Club chairman Dave Mogford awarded all the trophies and thanked all the players and spectators in contributing to a very good championship.
