WILDCATS' chairman Phil Bartlett says he will be making "thousands of phone calls" to find a suitable replacement for Jon Arm-strong whose season looks to be over after sustaining a broken leg on Saturday night.

The Wildcats' number one rider, and top points scorer this season, suffered the injury during the group stages of the Conference League Pairs meeting at the Wessex Stadium.

And Bartlett will be doing his utmost to bring in a new rider.

He said: "I'll be back on the old phone now making thousands of phone calls to team managers to see what we can work out.

"Fortunately we've got an eligible rider replacement for Jon so if nothing comes to fruition quickly then we've got that facility.

"But we'll be looking to speak to Andrew Bargh to step in and hope-fully fulfil some of those meetings to come."

After winning their opening race, against the Buxton Hitmen, Armstrong and partner Jay Herne collided in heat seven with both men odds on to take victory over Sittingbourne duo Jerran Hart and Dean Felton.

But with Armstrong leaving in an ambulance and Herne excluded for causing the collision, hopes of a Weymouth triumph quickly evaporated.

Bartlett added: "Unfortunately it wasn't a good night for us, obviously with Jon going out with a suspected broken leg you're never going to win this type of meeting with only one rider.

"It's very disappointing for the Weymouth fans but we will be back next year.

"We were riding well before it happened and Jay's gutted being the cause of it, but if you're luck's going that way then it's going that way and unfortunately lady luck goes a long way in these meetings.

"I did say beforehand that anything can happen and it certainly did."

Boston Barracudas defeated the Redcar Cubs in the grand final despite Cub Aaron Summers winning his fifth race from five, landing him the rider of the night accolade as a consolation.

Bartlett said: "Aaron's flying at the moment, I knew it was going to be tough but I did think we were going to be in with a chance, however, we were only going to be in with a chance if we could race all the races."
