WEYMOUTH Beach Volleyball Club continued their unbeaten start to the National League Division One season when they defeated Coventry Riga 3-1 in sets at Redlands.

The result puts Weymouth second in the standings in England's second-highest division.

Weymouth got off to a flying start, totally dominating the first set.

Good service receive from Weymouth, led by libero Elliott Sawyer, enabled man-of-the-match setter Ryan Stout to set up a well-distributed attack.

Middle hitters Sam Groom and Darren Harding took full advantage as Weymouth comfortably led throughout the set and won 25-18.

From here onwards the match turned into a very tight affair with Coventry upping their game and Weymouth not playing to the same high standards they have set themselves recently.

Coventry led for most of the set with Weymouth making a number of unforced errors.

At 23-21, it looked like Coventry would take the set but at this point Weymouth dug deep, upped their game and came storming back to win 27-25 led by great power hitting by Valdis Baranovs and Lukas Pusvaskis.

However, the third set saw Weymouth again drop their high standards and a number of serving errors enabled Coventry to take an early lead.

This time Weymouth were unable to pull the score back and Coventry took the set 25-21 to make it 2-1 overall.

The fourth set was again a keenly-contested affair with both sides battling for every point, neither able to establish any meaningful lead for most of the set.

Coventry had two chances to take the match into a decider when they led 24-23 and 25-24 but Weymouth did well to save both of these set points and then had their own match point at 26-25.

Finding their best form when they needed it most, a massive block by Pusvaskis and Harding earned the point for Weymouth to take the match 3-1.

Weymouth now travel to Bristol for their return match in two weeks and then entertain Dark Star Derbyshire at Redlands on Saturday, December 3. Admission is free and all spectators are welcome.
