BEAMINSTER skipper Ross Baker is urging his young charges to show more application with the bat ahead of tomorrow's "must-win" clash at Weymouth Seconds (2pm).
With no win in four games, Beaminster sit rooted to bottom spot in Dorset Funeral Plan Division One and are the only side not to have registered a victory this season.
Fundamentally, this is due to a top order which has collectively failed to score the volume of runs required.
But Baker believes this can be rectified in tomorrow's visit to south-coast neighbours Weymouth, who won for the first time last weekend.
"It's a must-win match because we don't want to lose ground on the teams directly above us," said Baker.
"I've had a word with the players, especially the batsmen, after last week's defeat and made it known what needs to be done.
"The talent and enthusiasm is definitely there, it's just the confidence and maybe a bit of self belief that is lacking, but that happens when you go on a losing run and it's up to us to turn it around."
Julian Davies and Chris Park failed to solidify the batting unit last weekend but they'll be hoping to be more productive this time along with Dan Hillier, who gets an opportunity at the expense of Dave Parry.
Baker added: "Dan's done well for the seconds and hopefully he'll do OK for us and get an extended run in the side.
"He's been knocking on the door for a while and now he's got his chance to show what he can do."
Weymouth skipper Steve Budd has lost Tom Newton to the first-team and has so far narrowed his line-up down to a squad of 13.
The Seasiders captured their first win of the season last Saturday when they beat Bournemouth Thirds by 71 runs and they will no doubt be looking to continue that form tomorrow.
Budd said: "It is a local derby, I know some of their players and both teams need a victory so it should be a fantastic game.
"All we can do is try and carry on from where we left off last week.
"It was a great performance we put on against Bournemouth and as long as the youngsters continue to show the same positive outlook they have shown since the start of the season then I will be happy."
