BRIDPORT Under-8s captain Sam Sherring has been snapped up by AFC Bournemouth.

The promising footballer has had a stellar season for the youngest Bees side and his efforts have not gone unnoticed by the Coca-Cola League Two club, which is renowned for its successful and productive youth system.

Sam, eight, signed a one-year contract with the Cherries in front of the first team in their final home game at Dean Court with his team-mates.

The contract, which may well be renewed in 2009 should the youngster impress, prevents Sherring from playing for Bridport or any other club but it is clear that, given the way he has conducted himself in front of staff at Dean Court, Sam may be destined for big things.

"Like all parents we thought he was good but then others told us he was," said mum Debbie.

"He went up to the Arsenal soccer school but it was too far away so phoned the FA to find the same kind of academies around here and they put us in touch with Derek Holder, who is the youth co-ordinator at Bournemouth.

"He said come down to Friday night training and asked Sam to return the following week, and since then he was invited to go to the academy and earned a contract."

The Salway Ash pupil has competed in the Teamtheme' tournaments that occur sporadically at St Mary's Field, but will now travel across the south coast twice a week to train with his compatriots.

He has already benefited from coaching and advice from former Dorchester Town star Matty Holmes, and will travel to places such as Coventry and Bristol for under-9s away matches next season.

Debbie added: "He is totally dedicated to football and wants to be a professional, but he is also very level-headed and laid back.

"His dad is the keeper for Charmouth but I think Sam's ambitions extend even further."
