DORSET County Women's BA president Jenny Andrews is confident of achieving a county first during her time in office this summer.
Even as senior vice-president last year the Wimborne member set in motion her target of Dorset fielding a side in the 2008 Amy Rose competition, the women's under-31 double rink championship.
Dorset have never played in this event but now they have entered and have been drawn to play Cambridgeshire on the hallowed greens of Royal Leamington Spa on Friday, August 1.
Having made the entry Andrews and Dorchester-based county liaison coach Peter Sherlock are determined to get a team on to the green and with bowlers like Emma Follis and Kate Brown Dorset have the beginnings of a squad.
Andrew said: "I am sure we will do it. Peter has been holding regular coaching sessions throughout the winter at Dorchester and those will continue outdoors."
To give the youngsters match experience Andrews and Sherlock have arranged several fixtures starting with Devon at Bridport on Sunday, May 18, and continuing against Hampshire and Somerset and the Dorset boys.
Andrews is no stranger to playing at Leamington Spa herself as she qualified with Joy Chaldecott and Joy Tappin in the English Women's BA triples five years ago and last summer was a member of the Dorset line-up that reached the semi-finals of the Walker Cup, the double-rink championship.
Andrews - Dorset born and bred having spent her early years at Shapwick near Wimborne - is one of the few women to have held the post of Dorset president indoors and outdoors.
She was the leading lady indoors during 2000-01 and when she handed over that chain of office she became county indoor secretary, a job she will hand over from this summer.
She took up bowls 30 years ago at Blandford with her late father Jack Cummings and together they won the club mixed pairs in their first season.
Cummings subsequently became Blandford club president and the Dorset IBA's third president in 1989-90 and is still remembered within the county as his daughter donated a trophy in his memory for the Weymouth Open tournament.
County secretary Nancy Bennett (Poole Park) is in her final season before handing over duties - hopefully to present assistant Margaret Clapp of Bridport - at the annual meeting in November.
Bennett took over the post in February, 2001, following the death of June Culpin.
In this season's inter-county championships Dorset face Somerset in the Walker Cup at Lyme Regis on Thursday, June 5, and play Herefordshire on June 10 at Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, in the Johns Trophy.
Dorset do not hold county trials but instead will be assessing players during the friendlies against Hampshire at West Moors on May 14 and against Sussex at Poole Park on May 21.
