BRIDPORT have sacked manager Edgar Marcu after a winless start to the season, chairman Adrian Scadding has confirmed.

Marcu, who is currently on holiday in his home country of Romania, officially took charge of just seven games.

Bridport Reserves’ boss Chris Herbst is expected to assume a caretaker role, with assistance from captain Dan Baggs and forward Mike Calverley.

Scadding is himself this evening due to fly out on holiday. It is understood he wanted to inform Marcu today rather than wait an extra week before his flight home.

Speaking to Echosport, Scadding said: “I could see things going back down the route they were.

“I’ve been under pressure from the committee to relieve him of his duties. It is because of the results we’re starting to get.

“First of all it seemed to be OK. I don’t know whether the players are losing trust with him.

“The other night against Axminster without him there it was a different game. They put up a really good fight against a team that’s second in the division.”

Marcu succeeded Rob Marquis as permanent boss at the beginning of the summer, losing six matches and drawing once.

Bridport are currently bottom of the South West Peninsula League Premier East and had hoped for a resurgence in form after a dismal 2021/22 relegation campaign.

Bridport will now look for their seventh permanent manager since 2019, with Rich Robson, Jamie Manley, John Godbold, Marquis and Marcu taking charge since Adam Fricker’s exit.

The Bees have not won a game for 377 days and counting, their last victory coming in a 2-1 triumph over Ashton & Backwell on Saturday, August 28 last year.

The Bees took just one victory and one draw in 36 matches while chalking up a goal difference of minus 168 in the process.

Coach Marcu was tasked with overseeing a huge rebuilding task and, to his credit, did earn the Bees’ first clean sheet for 48 games courtesy of a 0-0 draw with Honiton in August.

However, that was as good as it got for the former Otelul Galati player as results badly began to tail off.

Bridport’s 5-0 home thrashing to Cullompton Rangers was a turning point, with the Bees going on to a 7-2 thrashing by Bovey Tracey in their next game.

And despite a much improved and battling display by Bridport in Tuesday’s League Cup clash with Axminster, the Tigers recorded a 4-3 win.

Marcu was not present on the touchline for five of the seven games this season, the first three owing to a stadium ban picked up for a red card in last season’s 9-0 loss at Tavistock while assistant to caretaker boss Shaun Annetts.

He then flew to Romania for his brother’s wedding, missing the final two games of his tenure.

Bridport were due in action tomorrow at home to Okehampton before all football was postponed this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Bridport’s next scheduled fixture is at Sidmouth on Tuesday, before a home clash with Dartmouth next Saturday.
