WEYMOUTH Rowing Club is celebrating the success of its under-16 crew after they were crowned Jurassic League gig rowing champions at Lyme Regis regatta.
The junior crew finished ahead of the other Jurassic teams at Lyme Regis to cap a terrific season that has seen them finish first in four out of five races.
The Jurassic League is a competition between local gig rowing clubs with five regattas held across the Dorset coast.
The 2022 season began with success for Weymouth juniors at their home regatta in May. This was followed by an impressive victory at Swanage in June.
They finished a close second at Bridport regatta in July but recovered their form to win at Langstone and Lyme Regis in August and secure the Jurassic League trophy.
Tim Ayre, Weymouth under-16 coach, said: “The juniors have been brilliant and deserve their success. They worked hard all winter in some cold conditions and it has been great to see them row so well as a crew this summer.”
Weymouth are looking for some new recruits to maintain its successful record. If any under-16s are interested in trying gig rowing, they should email juniors@weymouthrowingclub.com for more information.
