BRIDPORT were knocked out of the Les Phillips Cup first round as Tavistock claimed a convincing 6-0 win over the Bees.

Tavistock, who lead the Toolstation Western League Premier Division, rested a number of players in this cup tie to strengthen their title push.

They were forced into an early change when Josh Parry went off injured, replaced by Tallan Burns.

And just six minutes after coming on, Burns put the Lambs 1-0 up when he made use of space in the area to fire past Bees’ keeper Josh Lucas into the bottom corner.

Bridport were then dealt a blow when captain Jake Owen went off with a knee injury, Callan Strelley his replacement.

As the Bees adjusted, Tavistock went 2-0 up four minutes after Owen’s departure as sub Burns forced a parry from Lucas into the path of Liam Prynn, who tucked home.

Bridport responded when Callum Arnold fired at home keeper Josh Oak following a scramble in the box.

Chances also came in the second half for the Bees as Arnold twice went close, along with Harry Burwood.

Instead it was Tavistock who showed the greater clinical edge as Prynn tapped past Lucas to cap a fine move before Josh Grant made it 4-0, pouncing on a Lucas parry.

Misfortune surrounded the Bees for the fifth as a shot clattered off the post and in off Jaydon Scadding for an own goal.

There were also contentions over Tavistock’s sixth goal, Burwood adjudged to have handled when attempting to make a block, allowing Prynn to step up and send Lucas the wrong way from the penalty spot for his hat-trick.

Tavistock had chances for more goals, Grant firing over when clean through and Lucas producing a superb save to deny Dan Evans.

Despite another difficult away day, Bridport had carried themselves with huge credit – a factor caretaker boss Shaun Annetts acknowledged.

“I think that’s right,” he said. “There have been games where players have given up when the score’s got to a certain level.

“But we were in the game and did extremely well. We restricted them to not many chances. Yet again, it was our own mistakes which led to their first and second goals.

“We conceded, as we often do, early in the second half, then a fourth and then a harsh penalty. Harry made a brilliant block, the ball went to Harry’s hands.

“The (fifth) was a real comical one, it came off the post and hit Jaydon and went off his shin, really unfortunate.

“Tavistock are a formidable side but for periods we competed and we played some nice football in short passages. Nobody dropped their heads.”
