WEYMOUTH manager David Oldfield has called for a reaction to the 3-0 loss at King’s Lynn when Vanarama National League title hopefuls Chesterfield visit Dorset tomorrow (3pm).

Oldfield’s men produced a below-par display In Norfolk in what had been billed as a game of extreme importance given the Linnets were behind the Terras in the table.

Wealdstone’s 2-1 win over Yeovil in midweek also put Weymouth 10 points adrift of safety with 18 matches to go.

And now Chesterfield, currently second in the standings, come to the Bob Lucas Stadium looking to continue their promotion charge in new boss Paul Cook’s first game.

Speaking ahead of hosting the Spireites, Oldfield told Echosport: “We need to react to a defeat and we need to make sure that we are working as hard as we can for every game.

“We’ve had some good performances since I’ve been here but we haven’t managed to pick up a win yet.

“It’s a case of us training as well as we can and looking for a reaction. It wasn’t a defining game, there have been too many others of similar ilk to make it defining.

“We need to make sure we are positive, strong and looking forward to the next challenge.”

He added: “It’s important that the boys are working to the best of their ability and they have done that.

“As a collective group we didn’t do enough on Saturday but overall since I’ve been here they’ve been diligent, honest and good.

“I feel we’ve made forward steps in the performances we’ve had. I felt that perhaps on Saturday we stood still but the boys do need to keep making those incremental steps and progress.”

On the quest for safety, Oldfield said: “The belief’s still there and it will be until (safety) isn’t the case.

“We just need to make sure we’re doing all we can. It brings back into focus the concentration and emphasis on ourselves.

“If we are doing all we can we’ll be able to move forward. Making sure that’s the case is absolutely paramount.”

Andy Robinson (foot), Josh Leslie-Smith (concussion) and Harrison Bruton (broken finger) are all “progressing” but remain major doubts, while Omar Mussa is available after suspension.
