Euro 2020 England vs Italy: Will we get a bank holiday if England win the football?

England managed to secure a 2-1 victory over Denmark at Wembley, and now the Three Lions are one match away from winning their first major tournament in half a century.

Last night Gareth Southgate was delighted for his players and the entire nation after England held their nerve to seal a historic win against Denmark and reach their first European Championship final.

Three years on from the heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia, the Three Lions roared to a 2-1 extra-time victory in front of 64,950 fans at a rocking Wembley.

England had to come from behind to beat a dangerous, well-drilled Denmark side as Mikkel Damsgaard’s impressive free-kick saw Jordan Pickford beaten for the first time at Euro 2020.

But Southgate’s side rallied impressively and Simon Kjaer’s own goal saw them level before Harry Kane fired the hosts to victory after Kasper Schmeichel saved his initial penalty, sparking pandemonium across the land.

Now the attention turns to Sunday and England’s date with destiny against Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

England fans are finally allowing themselves to imagine the wild celebrations that would unfold on Sunday night if England wins.

But quickly thoughts turn to work on Monday morning and the almost guaranteed hangover most of the country would be nursing.

So will we get a bank holiday if England wins Euro 2020?

Whilst a petition calling for an extra bank holiday — in the event of an England triumph — has already received more than 27,000 signatures, it seems unlikely.

The suggestion would first need to come from Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

A bank holiday would have to be announced by a Royal Proclamation from the Queen, according to the House of Commons Library.

The website states: “By convention the Queen acts on the advice of ministers. The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is the government department responsible for bank holidays.”

The petition, posted to the government website, reads: "Sunday 8pm is a difficult time for families to plan to be together for the event - knowing we have an additional day off the next day would significantly help this. Furthermore, a historic win should be celebrated.

"It would be expected for the winning team to parade the trophy, and a Bank Holiday would be a perfect time to do this. Also, English people would naturally want to continue to enjoy the win, giving the retail and leisure industry a much-needed opportunity to make up lost revenues."
