SHAMIR Mullings has left Weymouth with “immediate” effect, the Terras have announced.

Mullings struggled for form and fitness during his short spell with Weymouth and was sent off in last night’s 3-2 loss to Wrexham for an alleged elbow.

Speaking to Echosport, Weymouth director of football said the striker, who failed to score in his stint, left on “amicable” terms.

He said: “We thought he would add a viable option for the club.

“He trained and got injured which meant he then missed another period and then we had the second lockdown.

“He’s not really regained his full fitness – a lot of the players are still feeling the effects from Covid.

“He’s just not built up to speed as quickly as we need him to.

“Sham himself is disappointed it’s ended the way it has. We felt it was best for all concerned he went on to pastures new. Sometimes for players it just doesn’t work.

“We’ve parted on amicable terms, but he does leave with immediate effect.

“That will allow us to make some movement (in the player market), which we’re hoping to do.

“Sham’s honest enough to know it hasn’t clicked for him.”

Maitland condemned the treatment Mullings received from some fans following his dismissal against the Red Dragons.

“I don’t think he deserved to be booed off and to be chanted to be sent off,” Maitland said.

“That was disappointing. I understand their frustration, what they may believe as their rationale to do that.

“At the end of the day, the player is a human being, same as them, and that’s a disappointing way to treat anybody.

“That has no influence on why the decision was taken.”
