THE Weymouth Tennis Club Championships saw some excellent contests in the four finals played at Radipole.
Two of the club’s talented young players Rhys Halcrow and Pascal Maclean-Wood contested the men’s final treating spectators to some superb hard-hitting rallies.
Maclean-Wood eventually overpowered Halcrow in the second set to win 7-6, 6-2.
The men’s doubles proved to be a longer battle with Dan Mathers and Clive Stow winning two sets to one against Andy Moore and Dave Harrison, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5
In the mixed doubles, last year’s winners, husband-and-wife team Adam and Glenda Fraser had to relinquish their title due to a spirited performance by Ed Evans and Alexa Tilley, 7-5, 6-3
For the ladies’ doubles. Glenda and Hannah Malleson were too strong for their opponents Liz Varlow and Jenny Harris producing some fine shots in the swirling wind to win easily 6-1, 6-0
The preliminary rounds had been played throughout September and these championships rounded off an excellent summer of tennis for the club.
Seven teams enjoyed success in the Yeovil & District League with the men’s and mixed doubles teams reaching the finals of the League Knockout Cup.
