PORTLAND United assistant boss Reggie Carter says it will be nice to end their season at home to champions Sholing in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division today (3pm).
Sholing have had a phenomenal season, dropping points just four times all year. A win against the Blues would see them finish 31 points clear of Horndean in second and Carter had a lot of kind words for them.
Portland meanwhile, will finish fourth regardless of what happens against Sholing, which is the last league fixture of the season in the entire division.
Carter said: “It is a nice game to finish the league season at home against the champions and hopefully we can go out and put a performance in for our home crowd.”
Carter hopes his side will raise their game for the test however, and was encouraged by their performance in the reverse fixture, a 3-0 loss, on Tuesday night.
Goals from Dan Miller, Brad Targett and Dan Mason did the damage against a Portland side that have been struggling for form for some time now, as the Blues have not had two consecutive league wins since the beginning of the year.
Carter said: “I know we lost 3-0 on Tuesday night to them but I think they are a top quality side, talk about ball retention and pressing play.
“They are a level above, and quite rightly they are worthy champions.
“I think our players, when they play against better teams, because we have got some good players, they come into their own.”
Portland’s only change from the 2-1 win over Bashley on Saturday is the addition of Richard Marshallsay.
