WEYMOUTH suffered a ‘cupset’ as they were beaten 3-1 by eighth-tier Ramsbottom United in their FA Trophy second round replay at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
An own goal from Sam Sherring, alongside strikes from Eddie Moran and Nic Evangelinos, secured the victory for Northern Premier League Division One West side United, who had travelled from Greater Manchester on the day.
The Terras had responded initially through Ben Thomson to equalise at 1-1 but confusion from Lloyd Thomas and Ashley Wells allowed Moran to nudge the visitors in front again at 2-1 and they never looked back.
Weymouth made four changes, with Jordan Ngalo, Josh Wakefield, Yemi Odubade and Thomson in for Wells, Harry Baker, Abdulai Baggie and Stephane Zubar.
Ramsbottom started the fresher of the two teams, despite their lengthy journey, and had the first real chance of the evening.
Jamie Rother fired in a confident shot from the edge of the box, but despite looking convincing it was straight down the throat of Terras goalkeeper Thomas.
Weymouth should have opened the scoring through Thomson.
The forward was one-on-one with Rams’ goalkeeper Sam Ashton who threw a hand up to block his curling shot over the bar.
Tom Kennedy then had a chance through a 35-yard free-kick, but it was placed over the head of everyone inside the Terras’ box.
Yemi Odubade earned an unexpected corner when a half-hearted shot on the half-volley could not be controlled by Ashton, but the Terras could not make anything of it.
Jake McCarthy made a potentially goal-saving tackle on Rother before he was able to pull the trigger.
This then provoked a blistering counter-attack from the Terras, which ended when Odubade placed the ball on a plate for Brandon Goodship running inside the box, only to stumble when seemingly destined to score.
The game quietened down as several small fouls broke up the play, but with Weymouth edging possession.
Yet the game then burst into life with two goals in two minutes.
Firstly, the Rams took the lead when Kennedy crossed in off Sam Sherring.
A goalkeeping howler from Ashton then allowed Weymouth a clinical route back after just one minute.
Ashton raced off his line to try and rob the ball off Odubade, who kept calm to cross a ball past Ashton towards Thomson, who gleefully bundled the ball in.
Saturday’s stoppage-time hero Iyrwah Gooden then should have scored and came incredibly close to doing so, weaving through the Terras’ defence and rifling a shot in past Thomas and back off the inside of the post, before Evangelinos put the rebound over the bar.
Weymouth looked nervous and Ryan Ellison soon fired in but saw his shot blocked on the line, with appeals for handball falling on deaf ears as the first half came to a close.
Buckley had to be replaced at half-time with a bad ankle injury, and Wells replaced him.
Brooks fired over the bar as the second half got underway at pace.
However, Weymouth would soon concede in dreadful fashion.
Confusion between Wells and Thomas saw an attempted clearance come to Moran who superbly lobbed the ball over Thomas and into the empty net to hand Ramsbottom the lead for a second time.
Odubade was having chances up against Ashton, and looked a real threat as he forced the Rams’ goalkeeper into a good save.
United were still a threat despite Weymouth having nullified them somewhat after the goal, as Wells had to keep his feet to do well to clear away from Gooden.
Abdulai Baggie came on for Odubade as the Terras sought a way back into the contest.
Yet despite Weymouth improving since going behind, Evangelinos slid a shot under Thomas at the near post to wrap up the match as a contest.
This visibly deflated the Terras, who managed to shut up shop in the last minutes of the match, but were unable to construct a frantic finish with a late goal.
A late penalty threatened further embarrassment, but Rams’ captain Kennedy scooped his shot just over the bar.
