TERRAS’ chief Jason Matthews was happy to secure his second Dorset Senior Cup in as many seasons, as Weymouth held off a brave challenge from Western League underdogs Gillingham Town at the Avenue last night.
Player-assistant Tim Sills hit a double for Matthews’ men in the opening half during the 2-1 victory, but the way the Terras were left to hang on typified their campaign as a whole, according to their manager.
He told Echosport: “It’s always nice to win a trophy and obviously this is my second one.
“They (Gillingham) threw the kitchen sink at us at the end and we had a few injuries and people going down with cramp in what was a typical cup final.
“I felt that, on a better pitch, it would have been a good spectacle for Dorset football.
“Unfortunately, it was a little bit bobbly and didn’t make for a great game.
“But, in saying that, I felt we played the conditions well and played some good stuff in the first half.”
He added: “The game on the whole summed up our season. We didn’t take our chances and made the last five or 10 minutes tricky for ourselves.
“Credit to Gillingham, they came at us in the second half and threw everything at it, and got their goal.
“It made it a little bit of a tricky last five or 10 minutes but credit to my boys, we hung on quite well in the end.
“The bigger picture is the league this year, that is our aim. Results went for us a little bit last night and we are still in there.
“We will be fighting right until the death.”
n Portland United kept up their quest to seal the Sydenhams Wessex One title with a 3-1 win against Alton Town at Grove Corner. That victory moves the Blues eight points clear at the league summit.
Bridport drew 1-1 at Longwell Green Sports in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division.
