Hi readers, it’s Emily and William here this week listening to irritating background music as we write our column - so it seemed a good idea to write about annoying sounds, and which are worst!
I, Emily, thought of something straightaway, the sound of ripping tape.
Every Christmas I help Mum and have to put my hands over my ears. I hate it! The noise gives me goosebumps!
Also, if someone is clearing up and scrapes a spoon on the side of the pan, that is really irritating.
For me William, I don’t like hearing children screaming when they are really upset or parents shouting at their children.
Neither of us like the sound of screeching trains, which we can hear when we are out in town sometimes.
It’s noises we have no control of which are hardest. Some noises which can be hard if you can’t get away from them include fingers on a blackboard, a cat scratching a sofa, a dripping tap, cutlery being put into a drawer, reversing truck sounds or a car alarm. It’s easier if you can walk away! Which noises do you hate the most?
It got us thinking as to whether some people are more sensitive to noise than others, like people with ADHD who might get sensory overload more easily. It’s hard to support people because you can’t see if someone is struggling, like you could a broken leg.
Some noises which irritate us may not bother other people, we are all different. We have both learnt to manage noises mostly. Like if the washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher all go on at the same time, and we’re trying to relax, it could be annoying but we’ve learnt to get on with most irritating noises.
