AFTER reading a recent Looking Back article on Weymouth men who were killed in the Battle of Mesopotamia in the First World War, John Brown of Dorchester has got in touch to tell us about his uncles.
Both Tom and Earnest White, of Weymouth, were killed in the Great War, but John has no idea which conflict they died in.
He said: “Reading about the Weymouth men who were killed in the Battle of Mesopotamia made me want to find out more about my uncles.
“All I have is a plaque which I inherited from my mother with their names on it.
“I know very little about them apart from that they were from Weymouth and they were both young men when they went off to fight.”
Anyone with information should contact John on 01305 268277.
Thanks also to Jenny McGowan of Weymouth for getting in touch after she read her uncle Walter John Walden listed among the names of Weymouth men who were force-marched through the desert from Kut to Turkey with thousands dying en route.
She said: “I recently visited the BBC exhibition at Weymouth Pavilion and asked the experts from the Imperial War Museum if they could do some research.
“When they looked up my uncle’s name we saw that he was much younger than we thought when he joined the Army – he joined in 1912 aged 14.
“He must have lied about his age. Walter was only 17 when he died, not 18 as listed in the Army records.
“It’s very interesting to keep finding out information and I’m really keen to find out more.”
Anyone with more information on Walter Walden can get in touch with Looking Back by calling 01305 830973 or by emailing Joanna.davis@ dorsetecho.co.uk
