THESE pictures were sent in by Looking Back reader Pete Selby and are of the Zebra, the first zero energy reactor to start operating at Winfrith.
The Zebra began work in December 1962 and Mr Selby was one of the workers who started work on its construction the previous year. Its shell was made of thick steel plates welded together and then encased in concrete 20 feet thick.
At the time, Pete was working for an Anglo-American firm called Mothercat as a welder’s mate, earning around £25 a week.
