STAFF and volunteers from the RSPB at Weymouth Wetlands are running a free family fun day on Portland on Sunday, May 22.

There will be activities for all ages, starting with a guided walk for adults and older children from 8am to 10am. From 10am to 3pm, younger kids can get stuck into all manner of arts and crafts, games and trails.

“There will be a strong seabird theme to the day,” said RSPB Weymouth Wetlands information officer Luke Phillips.

“On the guided walk, we would hope to see some of the auk family, known as the ‘penguins’ of the northern hemisphere, such as guillemots and razorbills as well as gulls such as kittiwakes and nesting herring gulls.

“There might even be a chance of fulmars and gannets flying by and we’ll also be looking for the island’s magnificent peregrine falcons.

“For those who aren’t too good with heights, the tourist information centre on Portland Bill has screens showing live footage of the nesting birds, up close and personal, so we’ll also visit there.” For information call the Radipole Lake visitor centre on 01305 778313.
