SALISBURY Cathedral's new state-of-the-art lighting system will now illuminate the building late into the night thanks to an anonymous donation.

The donor, from Wiltshire, said: "Salisbury Cathedral is one of this country's greatest buildings.

"The spire itself is an awe-inspiring architectural masterpiece recognised around the world.

"It stands not only as a symbol of faith and a testament to medieval architecture but also of Salisbury itself and all that goes on in the city.

"In the past many people have voiced their disappointment the floodlights do not remain on for longer.

"For the late night visitor, the cathedral has been virtually invisible after 10pm."

The Dean of Salisbury, The Very Rev June Osborne, said: "We are thrilled to be able to illuminate the cathedral for longer into the evening sky.

"Residents and travellers take inspiration and solace from the sight of the cathedral."

Work on replacing the complete lighting systems of the interior, cloisters and exterior was completed in March this year.
