Friendship marked by murder mystery A MURDER mystery game helped celebrate the friendship between the Catholic community and a Portland church.

Portland’s Catholic community recently hosted St Andrew’s Night of Celebration at St Andrew’s Church Hall in Southwell.

Murder Medley, written by Hilda Swinney, was performed by a variety of residents on the island, including Rev Tim Gomm.

Speaking of the annual celebration, Hilda said: “This arose from the time when the Catholic Church of Our Lady and St Andrews in the Grove closed and every church of all denominations were only too happy to accommodate us. We went to St Andrew’s because it is similar to the church in the Grove. We were very happy there. We were shown such friendship.

“It’s all for free. The only revenue we have from it comes from the raffle which then finances the next year’s food and all the rest of it. There’s no profit made at all.

“This is the second year that we have presented the play that I have written with a cast of Anglicans and Roman Catholics.”

Hilda said she received positive reviews from those who attended.

She said: “According to the audience, it was a tremendously successful evening and they are looking forward to next year’s murder mystery.”
