FRENCH, maths and a fair bit of washing up came into play when pupils at Chickerell Primary School hosted a very special two-day event.
Youngsters from Years 3 and 4 organised a French Maths Café to boost their numeracy and language skills.
They greeted visitors, waited on tables and even did the clearing up, while members of the school choir entertained the coffee-drinkers with songs.
Invitations had gone out to families, local businesses and community groups and the children had been busy making cakes to sell, designing and creating bunting, designing French menus and composing a French quiz.
There were also two raffles and a guess the weight of the cake competition.
This is the fifth year that the café has been held in the school and each event has proved more successful than the last – as was shown by the constant stream of customers flocking through the doors of the main hall where everything was taking place.
Class teacher Wendy Symonds said: “The café created a real context for the children where they can use French and get involved with community life.
“They have been practising their French and working as a team sharing different roles throughout the day. They have also provided entertainment by singing French songs.”
Multi-cultural awareness is a key part of the curriculum at Chickerell Primary and the school has links with four schools in the UK and abroad.
