A CAFE in Weymouth has been helping pupils get a grasp of the world of work.
The WyFri Café helps students from Wyvern Academy learn about the world of work, and because it has been so successful, it will run regularly throughout 2015.
The café has been providing delicious snacks and meals to people at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester and Hope Church in Weymouth, on certain Fridays throughout 2014 and dates have now been set for this year.
Students from Wyvern Academy, a purpose-built school for children and young people up to the age of 19 with complex needs, including those in the Autistic Spectrum Disorder, are able to experience the world of work while helping at the café.
Andrew Holland, head of the Sixth Form, said: “There are often opportunities for our students to enter the world of catering.
“Working in kitchens and serving at tables can be quite challenging for those with special needs and the WyFri Café has been set up to provide real experience and training for those about to enter the world of work.
“Even those who do not intend catering as a career benefit from the experience as it is all about handling money, following processes and customer service, which are skills that are vital in many workplaces.”
The pupils have been serving up tasty food, including jacket potatoes, open sandwiches, salads, puddings and drinks.
The first WyFri Café day at Hope Church of the new year will be on Friday, January 9 and at the Dorford Centre on Friday, January 23 and the students would love some new customers.
Other Hope Church events will be on February 13, March 13, May 8 and June 12 and at the Dorford Centre on March 27, May 22 and June 26.
