STUDENTS at The Wey Valley School in Weymouth are celebrating their sporting success.
Six sporting students are forging ahead at local, regional, national and international levels thanks to the help of the school’s Sports Scholarship Grant.
Principal Phil Thomas said: “The Sports Scholarship Scheme supports students with sporting excellence, and ten youngsters have already benefitted from bursaries to support their participation in regional and national events.
“We are very proud to see our students taking part in these prestigious sporting events, and very appreciative of the time those same students reinvest in leading and coaching student activity back at school.”
The most recent contender, Mark Rankin, came a close second in the National Skills Challenge Final at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire, the home of England Golf.
Mark said: “The competition was a great experience.
“Despite just missing the top place, I really enjoyed the opportunity to play against other players with such a high standard of golf.
Libys McGuiness competed in the International Poomsae Championships in Ireland thanks to the grant which helped to cover the cost of flights, accommodation and entrance fees.
She said: “The competition was outstanding and in my division I proudly came eighth competing against others from Britain, Ghana, Gibraltar, Ireland and Scotland.
“Because of that I have been invited back to Ireland to fight later this month.”
Meanwhile three young cyclists, Rebecca Raybould, Matthew Mildon and Alex Jolliffe continue to represent Team GB.
The school runs numerous extra-curricular cycling activities and the sport is a particular strength at the school.
Rebecca said: “This year I have competed in almost all the under-16 female national road events. I qualified for the track national finals and finished ninth overall.”
Rebecca has also been selected to represent the South region in the inter-regional track finals in Glasgow and inter-regional mountain bike final at the Olympic venue.
April Heasman, a Year 10 student, has also recently received a scholarship for table tennis and is now representing her team at county level.
