The planning permission granted for the new stables on Portland to replace the old stables could be seen as a good decision.
However, it is yet again more new development. There does not seem to be a clear long-term development plan for Portland but just a piecemeal development and changing of land use. This results in haphazard development.
The Western Relief Road, allowing easier access to and from Portland, has also been in the news creating more controversy.
Portland needs a coherent long-term plan encompassing the whole island taking into account the quality of life for residents and protection of the environment so the uniqueness of the island is preserved.
The present government appears to be relaxing their criteria for planning permission. This may be reflected in the way planning permission is granted by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.
