A RADIO station project will finally take to the airwaves next month.

After a year of planning Bridport FM radio will start broadcasting at 1pm from Bridport Arts Centre forecourt for one week from September 17 to 23 on 87.7FM.

The community radio project, funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, will be staffed entirely by volunteers who will not only present programmes, but be responsible for their content and structure too.

Arts centre learning co-ordinator Kate Wilson said: “We want Bridport FM to be a true community station.

“We already have a good stock of pre-recorded programmes but we are now actively seeking members of the community to come on air and talk about what they do.

“This is an open invitation to local clubs, societies, charities and individuals to get in touch.

“If you have events coming up this autumn, come on air and tell us about them – it’s a great platform to promote things.”

Full training will be given to all those who wish to be involved.

Ms Wilson added: “We are also looking for a small temporary cabin we can borrow or hire cheaply to use as a studio.

“Ideally, it will have two rooms, one for the studio itself and the other as the reception/guest area.

“It will be sited on the arts centre forecourt for two weeks, so it’s a great advertising opportunity for a local company. If anyone can help, we’d be delighted to hear from you.”

A two-day training course on interview technique for young people was held at the arts centre, recently led by Debra Hearne and Georgie Green from partners Windrose Rural Media Trust.
