WEYMOUTH’S windsurfing stars are determined to give their all in tomorrow’s medal races.
Athens bronze medallist Nick Dempsey , 31, who narrowly missed out on glory at the Beijing 2008 Games, is currently in silver position in the Men's RS:X fleet.
With Dutch windsurfer Dorian van Rijsselberge already assured of gold, having an unassailable 22 point lead, Dempsey will be battling for silver against his German and Polish rivals, who lie in third and fourth place.
Dempsey, of Wyke Regis, finished ninth and second in his last two fleet races of the Olympic regatta yesterday, ahead of today’s rest day and tomorrow’s double-point race.
He said: “The weather was as expected, pretty funky.
“A few people did come unstuck like I kind of thought they would.
“It was slightly disappointing to lose five places on the third lap of the last race, the wind shifted.”
Dempsey said it ‘knocked the wind out of his sails’ to finish so far ahead of the Polish and German contenders in race two but then still be ‘pretty much level on points’ once their discards – for their week’s worst race scores – came into play.
He added: “Dorian has sailed better than I did this week – he 100 per cent deserves to win. Silver is the goal – I’m looking forward to Tuesday.”
Describing the cheers from the spectator boats on the Portland Harbour course, particularly on Saturday when his wife Sarah Ayton was on the Volvo boat Rum Jungle, he added: “It’s always nice when racing to have that support.”
“You have to stop yourself waving and think ‘concentrate, concentrate’.”
Team GB’s contender Bryony Shaw is currently seventh and just 11 points away from silver in the women’s RS:X fleet.
Beijing bronze medallist Shaw, 29, ‘found her turbo button’ in yesterday's final races and posted first and fifth places.
She said: “It was lighter today than it has been all week. In the first race I managed to lead from the start and stay in first – I found my turbo button.
“In the second race, again I was in a leading position but the pressure came from behind. It was hard work and at the final stage a couple of girls squeaked around the gate in front and I went from second to fifth.”
She added: “I’m 11 points off silver – if I have a great race and one of the girls doesn’t there.s potential in there but we’ll see.”
