AN OLYMPIC-inspired video made by two Weymouth women is causing a stir online.
The near six-minute clip named ‘Ode to the Olympics ’ has received more than 3,500 hits on YouTube.
Sarah Karaviotis, 40, and Karen Cupit, 43, said they decided to write a song about the ‘inevitable, ensuing Olympic buffoonery from the viewpoint of the ordinary Weymouth residents’.
The song, written to the tune of ‘The 12 days of Christmas’, lists the changes to the town made by the borough council in the build up to Games.
One line of the song says: “On the third day of the Olympics my council gave to me three closed roads, two no parking zones and a tall tower by the sea.”
The comic duo have even been recognised in the street by strangers who watched the video.
They made the video as part of The Great Weymouth Write-Off, a monthly gathering of creative residents.
Miss Karaviotis, owner of Baloogi Studios in Weymouth, said they have been ‘overwhelmed’ by how popular the video has become.
She added: “Since the video has gone online we have been completely overwhelmed by the response.
“We aren’t anti-Olympics and hosting the Olympics is a great opportunity for our town, but there’s more to the story beneath the Coca Cola banners and the branded buses.
“This area is suffering, just like the rest of the country from hard, fast austerity cuts.
“On top of this, we’ve had three years of intense roadworks which have hit local businesses hard, especially those in the town centre.
“It’s not all the fault of the council but we are allowed to question what they do in our name.”
Miss Cupit, a community nurse on Portland , said: “The video is light-hearted and meant to be funny but it has got a serious message.
“The response is fantastic and we have even been spotted in the street by people we don’t even know.”
Weymouth photographer Dan Roads helped the duo by providing photos for the video.
Since the video went online almost two weeks ago viewing hits have soared.
Dave Price, chairman of the Weymouth and Portland Hoteliers and Leaseholders Association, praised Miss Karaviotis, of Cromwell Road, and Miss Cupit, of the Park District.
He said: “The video is just awesome, really funny.”
