On my way to an appointment in Bristol today I tuned to local commercial radio in Somerset expecting to hear a warm inviting message to visit the Weymouth Olympic venue where there was no congestion, plenty of parking and great entertainment and hospitality all either free or very reasonably priced.
I could not believe it when the same repeated messages that I have heard for the past months came on still advising visitors to plan their journeys and make arrangements to avoid being held up, even advising that it might be necessary to travel down the night before to make it to Olympic events, generally painting an unpleasant picture.
I did notice that two of the electronic signs at junctions that had previously been warning of congestion at Weymouth had been turned off and the one near the M5 was just flashing and not readable in busy traffic.
On my return there was an abrupt road shut message on the electronic sign on the A354 at the Stadium roundabout though traffic seemed to be moving both ways and no diversion signs were posted. I suppose there are not enough police or council staff to hand to manage that.
Passing under the Ridgeway bridge the dead weeds sparsely covering the industrial chalk banks coming into view is no substitute for a big warm welcome to Weymouth and Portland sign or even a pair of pineapple pillars.
Is this really W&PBC and LOCOG trying to address their earlier mistakes through a long and costly negative campaign?
