Yesterday I caught a train from Hampshire and visited Weymouth for a day out.

Apart from the fact that Weymouth is a lovely place at any time, I really wanted to see some of the activities that had been put on in the town for the Olympics .

I had a splendid day and the local council and other groups responsible for the events should be congratulated for organising all that is happening along the seafront.

I thought the whole town had a carnival atmosphere about it.

However, I couldn’t understand where everyone was but guessed that many had been put off by tales of expected traffic congestion and delays on the railway.

In reality there was plenty of space on the trains and on the way home I caught a train non-stop as far as Bournemouth.

So far as I could see the roads were pretty clear as well.

The small numbers of visitors made me feel quite sorry for the organisers who have put in so much effort to stage the events but more than anything I feel sorry for all those people from Dorset and nearby counties who have all this on their doorstep and are missing it.

The world has come to visit Weymouth and Portland and if people miss this experience they may never have another chance.

For people of my age, if you miss it, it will be gone forever.

There is still plenty of time left and my advice would be to get on down to Weymouth and have a nice time. I hope to make another visit next week.
