• In a variable summer the Sutton Poyntz Society again enjoyed good luck with the weather at the Cream Teas afternoon in the Mission Hall orchard. An excellent turnout of locals and holidaymakers enjoyed jam and cream scones plus tea and good conversation in fine, bright but not too hot conditions. There is no doubt that these events draw locals together – a quick glance at the photos shows that – and the holidaymakers present told me that this was just the type of local village event they were hoping to experience (without a park and ride bus in sight).
• Ever thought of trying Scottish Country dancing? Well now’s your chance, for there will be taster sessions throughout August for beginners at the Scutt Hall in Sutton Road. The first session is on Thursday 9 August from 11am to 12 noon. No special clothing required, just turn up in casual wear and soft shoes and try out some simple dances. Everyone is welcome, adults and children alike, at the small charge of £1 for adults and 50p for children. Call Judie on 01305 833660 or email grajudseymour@hotmail.com to book your place for what promises to be good fun during the holidays.
• The Preston Village Market will be taking place on Saturday 11 August in the Church Rooms between 10.30am and noon. There is always a lot on offer including cakes, preserves, crafts, local produce, eggs and plants. Delicious refreshments will be available, giving the chance to rest weary legs and enjoy a chat. Why not drop in; you are assured of a warm welcome.
• The Team Walk on Saturday 18 August will start from the Wareham Walks car park at 2pm. The five mile route will take in the Wareham town walls and the river bank. Please take along a drink and a snack and wear sensible footwear, because even after the recent hot spell it can get muddy underfoot. For further information give Pat and Rob on 832857.
• On the first Sunday in the Olympics fortnight there were, according to the electronic signs, only X53 buses running through Preston! All mention of the 4C Sunday service had been removed! Perhaps the idea is that you cannot complain about incorrect information if there isn’t any on offer! After reports reached me of long waits at bus stops in the area despite a huge reduction in traffic, I asked First what problems they were experiencing, but have yet to receive a reply.
