On what planet does your anonymous correspondent live ref. ‘Responsibility of personal safety’, Echo Friday, July 27?
Do they not have any accidents where he lives, which happen even to those fully prepared for the activities they indulge in?
And does he not realise that a large part of the SAR helicopter missions do not have a maritime/shipping connection such as the recent rescue of a young boy, who had stopped breathing on Chesil Beach and had to be transported to Southampton for emergency treatment, which was reported on the facing page to his letter?
As to his assertion that the Secretary of State’s validation of the facts support the removal of the Portland SAR helicopter, I have yet to see the proof.
My recent correspondence with the Secretary of State and her department make reference to the ability to track major vessels in the channel and no mention is made of the actual role of the helicopter in local and not so local accidents involving walkers, climbers, divers and sailors.
