HOLLYWOOD A-lister Nicolas Cage picked West Dorset as the perfect spot to celebrate his wedding anniversary.

The star of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Leaving Las Vegas, Gone in Sixty Seconds and Ghost Riders, who is said to command ten million dollars per movie spent a typical day at the seaside with his wife Alice Kim and young son Kal-El.

The man who once owned a £175,000, 67-million-year-old dinosaur skull delighted fans on the Jurassic coast by chatting with fans as he spent a leisurely day in the town, taking in the sights, having a slap-up lunch and later quenching his thirst with a pint of Old Rascal cider.

At lunchtime it was the best of everything as the Cages toasted each other on their eighth wedding anniversary at Hix Oyster and Fish House in Lyme Regis.

Restaurant manager Ciprian ‘Cipi’ Constantinescu said the family had arrived without a booking and asked if they could have a table on the new outside terrace.

“Of course we were happy to say yes,” said Cipi, who served them the restaurant’s signature cocktail, the Hix Fix, fine wines and a meal including lobster for the main course.

“He said it was the best lobster he had eaten in Europe,” added Cipi.

“He was very pleasant, you would have thought they were just a normal American family if you did not know who he was.

“They ordered three courses and when the dessert came he ordered another main course of fish and chips to go with it – I think he wanted to try as many things as he could.”

The family sauntered along the seafront and bought a bag of prawns at Simon Bennett’s Old Watch House wet fish shop.

“He came into the shop and picked up some prawns and asked if there was anywhere they could go for a quiet drink, so we suggested the Royal Standard,” said Mr Bennett.

Barman Josh Cumming at the Royal Standard said he had recognised the superstar instantly.

“It was a bit surreal. He came in with his wife and son and had a pint of cider.

“They sat out in the garden, which was full and people certainly knew who he was. He seemed happy to talk to people.”

Nicolas Cage has a long association with the west country, having owned a castle in Somerset and a townhouse in Bath, before debts and tax demands led to him selling off assets.
