In response to C Hobbs, I disagree that Nowhere Island is ‘a con in the name of art’.
Although there are numerous examples of art from the last 100 years deliberately aiming to antagonise or amuse an audience, I would suggest this is not one of them.
Given the island was revealed only through the melting ice of a retreating glacier, it seems the project is concerned with important environmental issues from the outset.
At the same time, over 15,000 people have registered to become citizens and contribute to the island’s constitution.
The idea of participating in the production of the constitution of a new nation is thought-provoking and asks the audience serious questions about what should be valued in society. Institutions such as Bloomberg, The University of the West of England and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs are partners in the project. See it while you can!
