Okay, so the Olympics are on. Not being sporty types, what on earth are we going to do with ourselves for the next two weeks?
The roads will be in chaos so best not to use the car but it’s not far into town so we can at least walk in. We have read the Maritime Mix and other brochures telling us about what’s on, and as there are a lot of free events, I’ve just retired so thought I would try some of these many events and performances out.
We have been to High Angle Battery on Portland for the Doldrum’s Lair and enjoyed a superb performance by the young dancers, listening to the many Portland voices talking about the island and its butterflies.
Back to Weymouth B-side area and the evening concert.
We have seen the parade of the wind gathering machines, antics and acrobatics of many of the performers and both the rehearsal and performance of the Battle of the Winds, followed by the “Squibbers” (a wall of fireworks) and the spectacle of over 2,000 torches spread out along the beach being carried into the sea, (it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up).
On the Town Bridge we listened to the band accompanying the 7pm lift.
Now the best thing of all of these things is that it was all free to watch. Okay some of the things did need a pre-applied ticket to get in, but well done Weymouth – so much going on that the locals can enjoy. What a wonderful few days we’ve had.
