A WEYMOUTH student is devastated after vandals wrecked his moped.
The moped belonging to Matthew Sturmey, of Ludlow Road, Weymouth, was taken from the drive of his family home and dragged to a pedestrian crossing down the road where it was found on Tuesday morning with the wheels bent and broken.
Matthew, 16, a student at Budmouth College saved the money for the moped from his paper round and selling his Xbox and games.
As a budding football player for Weymouth Reserve and Portland United Youth F.C, Matthew used the moped to get to matches and training.
The crime which happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning has left the moped damaged and made it unusable. Matthew is unable to replace it and his third party insurance will not cover the vandalism.
Matthew Sturmey said: “I’d be too scared to ride it now; it wouldn’t be safe with the wheel bent at an angle.”
He added: “I’m surprised I didn’t hear anyone, whoever it was.”
The crime was reported to the police and Matthew said the moped handle bars were checked for finger prints but findings were inconclusive.
Matthew’s sister Donna Rowe, 25, of Weymouth, said: “My little brother has worked his socks off to get the moped like so many of us that work really hard and for this to happen is just unfair.”
Mrs Rowe added: “It’s not like the moped was in anybody’s way, it was on my mum’s drive. I’m really irked for my brother that some vandal has done this.”
Mrs Rowe stressed how hard her brother worked to get the moped and now that it is broken his main transport and independence has been taken away.
Mrs Rowe also added: “I have my own cake making business, without relying on the government.
“I work really hard to get more money for my family but if I could afford to buy him a new moped then I would.”
Dorset Police are continuing their investigation of the incident.
