In the light of the fact that approximately 1,700 signatures were collected requesting a review of the return of the fairy lights, I note with interest that W&PC have now got the matter under review, possibly with a costing for purchase and installation being the main priority.
The figure of 1,700 could have and should have been much higher, I suspect. I am in favour of the reintroduction of the lights, yet couldn’t be bothered to sign the petition. No doubt others were the same.
Torquay has been quoted as being a prime example of such lights that are suitable for purpose, i.e. reasonably cheap to purchase and run. Installation would be the one-off prime cost, I imagine.
This is probably not the right time to make such a suggestion, but were W&PBC to say they were not going to reject the idea, might it not be an idea to launch a fund, where anyone sufficiently interested or motivated, could donate whatever they could to not pay for, but assist in replacing what was an asset to Weymouth fantastic promenade?
Once the Games are but a memory, together we need to ride on the crest of the wave and do everything we can to ensure the name Weymouth is as popular as a tourist destination as some of the other resorts. Recently we have added the sandcastle feature, the observational tower, the ferry will return, who knows what will be next? To do nothing is not an option.
