We have of late seen too many maritime and coastal incidents in the locality from boats setting sail without basic safety equipment to people swimming in the dangerous waters off Chesil Beach.
It is now time to ensure the wellbeing of all who use our local waters and coastline by shifting the focus to safety and prevention.
Constructive ideas are needed, which the community has the ability to implement, control and fund such as:
- A booklet and accompanying website to cover the range of maritime and coastal activities with details on the activity, safety considerations, grading of local areas for safe usage or danger, and an index of local businesses and clubs that can supply equipment, training or group participation;
- A vessel and equipment safety check scheme with the option of providing essential items such as maritime radios, emergency beacons or lifejackets;
- A suite of easily accessible training courses such as maritime first-aid and survival, engine maintenance and repair, or diving operations and safety.
With grants, sponsorship and donations it should be possible to provide these services free to youngsters, high-risk participants, and the local fishing fleet while minimising the cost to others.
Together we have the opportunity to mitigate dangers and to put safety first.
