Dorset Police are urging people to have a safe and secure Olympic games in Weymouth and Portland.

Assistant Chief Constable Adrian Whiting, Police Gold Commander for the Olympic security operation in Dorset and chairman of the Local Resilience Forum Co-ordinating Group, said: “Despite a busy few weeks in the county for Dorset Police and our Local Resilience Forum partners, particularly with the tragedies and incidents arising from the challenging weather conditions, we are confident that we are ready to deliver a safe and secure Games here in Dorset.

“As a partnership – through the Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Local Resilience Forum – we are planned and prepared for what we anticipate will be further busy weeks ahead.

“Residents and visitors to the events in Dorset can also take some simple precautions to ensure a safe and healthy time, for instance keeping an eye on valuables and I’d urge those going to events to plan their travel in advance.”

The following advice is being issued to residents and visitors ahead of the Games:
• Keep your possessions safe and in crowded places keep your bag closed and in front of you
• Remember to close and lock all windows and doors, even if you only leave the house for a few minutes.
• Remove all valuables from your vehicle
• Limit your alcohol consumption, as you are more likely to have an accident or fall victim to crime when drunk
• Do not leave bags or belongings unattended, it may cause an unnecessary security alert
• Only purchase tickets from the London 2012 website, Don’t be tempted by other websites or ticket touts – they could be fraudulent and you might end up paying lots of money for fake or non-existent tickets
• If you need to contact Dorset Police call 101. Only dial 999 when a crime is in progress or life is at risk
• Check the weather and conditions before setting out on journeys and exercise caution if you encounter standing water on the roads
• Wear appropriate clothing e.g. loose cotton clothing and a sun hat if it is hot; and appropriate footwear to avoid trips and falls
• When the sun comes out, apply plenty of sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or over
• Make sure you take plenty of drinking water
• Carbon Monoxide is the silent killer. Gas barbecues in enclosed spaces can be lethal
• Having a barbecue? Please don't put it in the bin
• When you're done, put that cigarette out, right out
• Never leave candles unattended
