Where can you find tranquillity, peace and calm in Weymouth during Olympic fortnight?
Answer – St Mary’s Church in St Mary's Street, where local ‘Artwey’ artists will re-create the soothing sight and sounds of the sea to refresh weary residents and visitors seeking refuge from the Olympic summer crowds.
This beautiful, almost hidden gem of a church is a part of ‘Refresh’ – a welcoming and hospitality provision in response to the Olympics, with light refreshments offered freely by local churches.
The interior of the church will be hung with original paintings, artists’ prints and textile art. Also on display will be exciting new 3D work designed and made in glass, textiles, hand-made felt and recycled/found materials – not to mention artists’ cards - reflecting waves and the majestic undulating beauty of our Dorset coastline.
You can also see the largest selection so far assembled of Weymouth’s very own Giant Wall, an artist-led project, in which a huge wall hanging is being created from hundreds of fabric portraits made by local people, featuring their personal ‘giants’ – mainly Dorset residents, present or past – who have loved, encouraged and/or inspired others.
The exhibition runs from July 30-August 10, 10am-noon and 2pm-4pm, Mon-Sat.
