A NEW nation will be joining Weymouth shores tomorrow.
Nowhereisland is a piece of Arctic land taken by artist Alex Hartley and made into a new ‘nation’.
The island is due to arrive at Bowleaze Cove in time for the Olympic sailing events.
The launch event is free, starting at 1.30pm and will include musicians and performers as well as a march.
The idea behind Mr Hartley’s work is the importance of citizenship as it gives people a voice within a brand new nation.
Spokesman Nathan Taylor said: “It is the only nation bringing itself to the Olympics .”
The accompanying embassy is a mobile museum full of artefacts and resources encouraging visitors to explore and contribute their ideas for a fair nation.
Anyone can become a citizen of the island and can even put forward their own constitution ranging from ‘free ice cream on Fridays’ to more thought-provoking issues as ‘everyone has the right to be heard’.
The visiting nation is part of the Maritime Mix, London 2012 Cultural Olympiad by the Sea which is running events throughout the year.
