The Covenant we uncovered is now reinforced by an undertaking that the council will carry out full public consultation before they take any decision that may affect the future of the Marsh.
But that is not the end of the matter, for two reasons.
Firstly, the new Local Plan now being drawn up does not specify that the Marsh is to be protected.
And secondly, it is clear that the council would like to encourage users of the Marsh to move to Redlands or to drive them there by increasing charges for the use of facilities on the Marsh. There is not enough room at Redlands.
It is also much too far from the town centre: the Draft Local Plan refers to a maximum of 2.5km, and Redlands is more than 5km away from the King’s Statue.
I would therefore ask all those concerned about The Marsh to send an email or a letter to David Clarke , the chief executive, (d.clarke@westdorset-weymouth.gov.uk or Council Offices, North Quay, Weymouth, DT4 8TA) and say: The new Local Plan should specify that the Marsh is to be protected as green space and playing fields. Charges for football pitches and other facilities on the Marsh should not be greater than those at Redlands.
Also please ask your local councillor to press these points.
