Since the new bridleways and footpaths have been constructed adjacent to the Weymouth Relief Road, there has been a marked increase in walkers and people exercising there dogs. What a great shame it is that the council could not see fit to install dog litter bins along these routes.
When this matter was taken up with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council their response was ‘they cost too much to maintain’.
Well now we have a health and safety issue. Many of the dog walkers seem to lack brain power.
They are fully aware that allowing a dog to foul the pathway and not picking it up is an offence.
They seem to be oblivious to the fact that picking it up with a plastic bag and then discarding the bag beside the path or in a bush is also an offence under the litter act.
Now here is the health hazard.
Dog excrement can contain a worm. When it is in dust form, the spores can become air born and possibly blow into children’s eyes causing toxocariasis and blindness.
On a recent visit to a well-know and well-used beauty spot on our Chesil Beach there is a wooden footpath constructed over the shingle. At the end of the wooden footway I noticed at least a dozen plastic bags neatly tied containing dog excrement, a few yards away from a litter bin. It seems quite obvious to a normal minded person enjoying the environment, that some indiscriminate people are doing their best to destroy the enjoyment of others, by behaving in such a selfish attitude. Do these indiscriminate members of the public need brain surgery?
