WEYMOUTH will be rocking to eclectic sounds at this year’s carnival.
A singing dustman, a Eurovision hopeful and the cream of local talent are lined up to perform on the beach stage at this year’s event.
Organisers are repeating the success of previous carnivals by arranging another party on the beach.
Weymouth Carnival will be held this year on Wednesday, August 15, just a few days after the Olympic Games closing ceremony.
The event is fast approaching and plans are being put into place to make it a carnival to remember.
There’ll be no Red Arrows this year but there will be an appearance by the Aerostars, Europe’s largest and most spectacular aerobatic formation display team.
There is also one of the south’s biggest processions and lots of fun activities on the Esplanade.
Stars of the beach stage include Andy Abraham, a former dustman-turned platinum-selling recording artist.
Andy shot to fame in 2005 when he appeared on the hit TV talent show the X-Factor and made it to the runner-up stage.
He is one of the stars of this year’s Weymouth pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk and is taking time out of auditions to be at the carnival. Other panto stars will join Andy on a carnival float later in the day.
Also appearing is Sophie, a Maltese-born singer who appeared in her country’s Eurovision semi-finals competition with her song ‘Love to Love You.’ She is touring the UK this summer and will be stopping off in Weymouth for the carnival.
Other entertainment includes songs from Weymouth Operatic Society, local artists David Powell and Billy Hutchinson and bands Shooter and Stereoironics.
Weymouth 2012 Carnival Chairman Roger Hogbin said: “This is Weymouth’s very own annual major event and it is run by unpaid volunteers in order to raise money for local good causes.
“We are aiming to make this year’s carnival, run by the Rotary Club of Melcombe Regis, one of the best ever.
“We are already seeing the interest and excitement building, and carnival will be a fantastic finale to the two weeks of Olympics which end just three days before.”
Mr Hogbin said a special addition to the day will be a cavalcade of motorcycles representing Weymouth Bike Night.
Up to 200 motorcycles will make their way along the Esplanade before the grand procession which will start from the Pavilion at 6.30pm.
