A TOILET attendant is flushed with pride after plenty of praise for her lovely ladies loos.
Normally a trip to a public lavatory can lead to all manner of unpleasant surprises.
And Weymouth has been criticised over the years for the terrible state of public toilets with visitors and locals alike condemning the rundown and poorly maintained facilities.
But visitors to the ladies toilets on The Esplanade, close to the London 2012 shop and former Weymouth TIC, will find flowers, flags and music playing.
The Echo has received lots of letters praising the toilets looked after by Michelle Lea of Three Towns Cleaning, which attends public loos in the borough.
In one letter, Mrs D Smith, of Swindon, who is spending the summer in Weymouth, wrote: “I must say well done to the very friendly and kind attendant, Michelle. The toilets are spotless, wonderful music and flowers.”
And Joan Brackley, of Wolverhampton, said: “I have never written a letter to a newspaper before but I had to write to comment on these lovely loos.
“I have been coming to Weymouth for many years and the toilets were so bad that I gave up on them and popped in to a local restaurant for a cup of tea just so I could use the facilities.
“But I heard the seafront loos were done up and it was great to see someone taking so much pride in an unglamorous job. Well done.”
With the help of fellow attendant Emma, the spotless lavatories have led to a bursting tips jar.
Mrs Lea said they plan to invest the well-earned tips in to making the toilets even nicer.
She said: “I want to make it a nice experience for everyone that visits.
“The more people say they like it, the more I want to do. It makes you proud.”
“It’s really nice when people give you tips because it’s recognition for all your hard work.
“Plus we can use it to buy even more things.
“I want to make it a nice experience for everyone that visits.
“I usually alternate between playing pipe music and Daniel O’Donnell when I’m here. We have more things planned, like lights and dragon-flies.”
Mrs Lea can usually be found in her office at the loos where she is on hand and always happy to help.
She said: “Sometimes little kids come in here with their mums and they say ‘Wow!’
“I’m pleased people like it so much.”
