A HAIRDRESSING student whose mother battled cancer had her head shaved to raise funds to help find a cure.
Kelcie Godsell-Collins, 17, faced the clippers in a bid to raise £250 for Cancer Research.
She watched as her mother, aged 50, was diagnosed with the disease after nursing Kelcie’s grandmother through it.
Kelcie said: “My mum nursed my nan through cancer, which was awful.
“When my nan passed away, we found out my mum had cancer. It was so hard.
“Luckily she’s okay now but it will take a couple of years before she’s fully recovered.
“She’s very proud of what I’m doing.
“My mum didn’t have to have chemotherapy, but I said to her that even if she did lose her hair, I would shave mine off in support.
“When women have cancer and they have to go through radiation therapy, they lose their hair and that must be horrible.
“My hair is quite short at the moment already, so it won’t be too bad.
“My friends think it’s a bit mad, but they’re very supportive.
“Anything I can do so that other women like my mum don’t have to go through that, I will.
“I’m aiming to raise £250. I’d really like it to be more.
“I’m not scared about having my hair shaved off, but I am scared of not raising as much money as I would like to.
“I’m excited though.
“My tutor will be doing my hair.
“She’s cut my hair before so I know I’m in good hands.”
Kelcie will go on to her second year of training at Weymouth College in September.
Her godmother Julie Bird said: “She is so brave. What a lovely thing to do.
“For a young girl to have her head shaved when she’s at that age where appearance is so important, is the nicest thing ever.
“Kelsey’s mum having cancer has affected her really badly.
“I’m so proud of her and what she’s doing.”
